If you are new here, welcome to my world of original oil paintings. If you would like to get acquainted with my paintings, there are some links above to my Online galleries. If you know my artwork, well then, welcome back!

Ever since I got started as an artist back in High school, I have been keeping a sketchbook. My sketchbooks are private, it's a place where I get to express myself without judgment, well I guess that I can judge for myself. It is possible that my art is so public that I need a space where I can go and just see what happens, without any repercussions.

Today I have decided to share some of my latest drawings here, from my latest sketchbook. They are all pen and ink drawings on paper. They are all very recent, done in the last few months. I have been thinking about the way my garden grows and how all things are related, especially when they are growing together.

When I start a drawing I do not have any idea how it will progress. Sometimes it does not take on any form that we could call realistic. Other times, usually near the end of the drawing it takes on a shape that we can understand. This is a very different approach to my oil paintings which are almost always planned out ahead. You could say that the drawings are an outlet to the semi rigid blueprint that is the idea of my main project in my studio. Since the oil paintings are also time consuming it is nice to be able to make a drawing all in one sitting, maybe a couple of hours, maybe less, it all depends how the pen moves across the paper. Since the drawing is in a sketch book, I do not need to think about sharing it, the drawings that are here on this post are just a select few that I wanted to show you today. The other drawings will remain anonymous, hidden from view by the cover and other pages in the diary.

Matthew Holden Bates Blog Number 1

It talks about a strange coincidence that I encountered in one of my paintings. I hope you take a look, and of course, I would like this blog to be a discourse about art so there is a form below where you can leave a comment, and start a discussion about something here, or if you would like to start a new discussion, that is cool too! This blog is not just about my art, I will be making posts about other artists I know, and I will be talking about Firenze, my adopted city and often my muse. I will be posting weekly so go ahead and bookmark the link above as all new posts will be linked to the main blog page. I look forward to hearing from you. Have a great day!

A Presto!
